Have You Got A Card?

Have You Got A Card?

My CardI was at a friends birthday party on the weekend. It was a fantastic event and I was sitting with some people I had never met before.
Now as usual, we started talking about what we did. It's a standard opener, "So what do you do?" You have probably used it yourself.
Well it didn't take long until we were chatting away full steam and we coming up with ideas on how to increase her business. It only made sense after talking business to ask for her business card and give her one of mine.

Then I shuffled seats. Again the conversation started, "So what do you do?" And we were off and racing (in fact, he is into horses and runs a horse magazine). A few more ideas and then it was "So do you have a business card?"

While I am not saying you should turn every function into a business meeting, I am saying that you need to have your cards ready. If you are like me and are passionate about what you do and how you may be able to help others, why wouldn't you give a business card. Much to wifey's dismay, I have even swapped business cards at a funeral!

Now while you probably don't need them as much now as you can put details in your phone, it is always great to have them handy. (
I am often surprised at people who go to networking events without a stack of business cards. What the..?) I was taught years ago, that a business card in your wallet gets crushed. So I have a stash of them in the special pocket of each suit jacket, the glove box of the car, my compendium, my card holder and some reserve in my wallet. It pays to be ready if ever someone asks, "So what do you do?" or "Have you got a card?"

So Friends, have you got a card?

Is It Engaging?

Is It Engaging?

I was working at the AUSTECH 2013 tradeshow run by AMTIL last week. It had some huge and amazing equipment on site. Laser cutters, sheetmetal stampers, 3D printers and loads of other great technology. It was a really great show. But regardless of the technology, whatever you have, you need to be able to make it engaging. Either get the prospects attention or get them asking questions about what you are doing.
Here are a couple of highlights from AusTech for you:
1 - Bolt Welding.
Why tell someone what your machine can do when you can show them. Here is an 8 second video of the bolt welder in action.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/thTaZY0KJY8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
2 - Peen Hammer
Why show them what you can do when you can let them do it.
The Peen Hammer you see in Cassie's hand is used to punch details on to steel. In this demonstration you can type in your name or any word you want, then then stamp it on the wall. If you zoom in on the top centre of the wall you will see my name proudly stamped (it's good to be tall).
Hall of Fame
3 - Large Australian Manufacturer
This well known manufacturer and supplier to industry decided that they didn't want to be there all day so they left this sign on their booth. To me it was a colossal waste of money. For the sake of one staff member to positively promote the brand, get interested details and engage with the public, surely it would have been worth it.
Why Bother?
When you are in the market place, either at an expo, face to face or even on social media, ask yourself the simple question, is it engaging?

How Are Your Basics?

HOW ARE YOUR BASICS?

Lush

On Friday, I visited the Better Homes and Gardens Show with my exhibiting business partner, Danielle Storey to work with one of our exhibiting clients. There were loads of exhibitors all trying their best to get their message across and stand out from their competition or at the very least, stand out to their prospects.

Well... I guarantee you that they THOUGHT they were trying their best but most of them were missing the basics.

  • They didn't smile (this is the easiest thing to do but most don't)
  • It took as 2/3rds of the show until one of the exhibitors engaged with us
  • So many were sitting down looking at their laptop or phones as people walked past
Others were doing the basics really well.
  • Crisp looking stands
  • Friendly faces with welcoming comments
  • Themed qualifying give aways
What about you Friends? Whether it is for your exhibiting effort or in what you are doing right now, are you doing the basics?
Get the basics right and it will make a world of difference.

PS You can see a few photos and a video review of the Better Homes and Gardens show on our blog.

Does it Hurt?

DOES IT HURT?

Last night, Wifey and I cooked up a Lankan curry feast for a group of friends. One couple brought their 10 and 14 year old kids with them. Now wifey and I like a bit of kick in our curries and even though we tried to make tame ones last night, a couple of them were a bit strong.

Our friends 10 year old had never had authentic curry. He was keen to try something new. Now we warned him that some were a bit hot and if it was too hot to have some yoghurt or a banana (water really doesn't help). So he knew it could cause him some pain but he wanted to try anyway. He started on the potato curry which was the really hot one. A few tears welled up, his face turned red and he went for the yoghurt big time. But he also kept his good humor and then went for some cooler and less spicy foods. A great effort and kudos to him.

What about you Friends? When did you last try something new? Something you knew had the potential to cause you pain as well as representing a milestone in new experiences? When did you last ask "Does it hurt?" and even when the answer is "Yes" or "Maybe" do it anyway?

Here is Your Present

High Tea

Here Is Your Present

As you know, it was my birthday last week. I had a fabulous three day festival to celebrate including a High Tea which was rather posh! It was also fabulous to hear how people had passed on my birthday wishes to others with some fantastic reactions.

Today I wanted to give you a present.

It is a simple two page worksheet that helps you celebrate the year past and look forward to the coming year. I call it my Birthday Bash. It will only take you 10 minutes to complete but it will return far more value. To get your copy just click here.

Happy Birthday from me to you!

Happy Birthday Time

Happy Birthday Time

Birthday Pic

I am having one of my favourite kinds of years. It's one where I have a birthday.

Some people know that it is my birthday this week on Friday 19th April. It's not a big one, it's just another average, everyday kind of birthday. The kind of birthday where all of your friends wish you "all the best". Especially now that Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and every other kind of social media tells everyone it's your birthday. You get some fabulous wishes from random people you hardly know!

Here's the thing.

My life is pretty awesome. I'm not bragging, it's just a fact. I have a fabulous wife, a great business, good health, fun toys, loving family, stupendous friends, a cool choir and I have great experiences. So as much as I love these birthday wishes, I don't really need them. But loads of other people do.

You see them looking grumpy in meetings, walking down the street, in the supermarket and even in elevators. So I had a cunning plan, why not give all of these fabulous birthday wishes to people who really need them?

I get it sounds a bit whacky and the kind of thing that ends up on a dodgy TV show, but I really don't care. I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said, "What other people think of me is none of my business."

I really would like everyone to give my birthday wish to those who need them more. So I need your help.

This week, whenever you get the urge to wish me a happy birthday, give it to someone else. Give it to a random stranger, a work colleague, someone you love, someone you like, someone you have a slight distaste for, someone you have a crush on, the check out person, the person in the car next to you - it doesn't really matter who, just be sure to give it. Give to them as genuine a wish as you would have for me for a year full of joy, magic and delights. You may shake their hand, hug them, kiss them, wave at them or simply smile at them.

You may give a speech even! Something like, "On behalf of Warwick, I would like to give his best birthday wishes to you. May you have a fantastic celebration of life today." It may be smaller. Something like, "Dude!" It doesn't really matter, what is important is the intent.

Who could ask for a better birthday present? So Friends will you help me?

Things Are Changing

Things Are Changing

The only constant is change.

We have read that, heard that and seen that so many times, yet still we get surprised by change. I was speaking to a large management team on Saturday about change (among other things) and they proudly told me that they all embrace change.

Upon further investigation, it turns out most of them ALWAYS sleep on the same side of the bed, have THEIR CHAIR at the dining table and in the lounge room and when they go to the monthly meeting they nearly always sit in the same spot. That doesn't mean they are no good at change but it may mean that they struggle to embrace change more than they think.

What about you Friends? How are you with change?

By the way, as you can see from this email I have changed the way the weekly newsletter is sent. This should be a lot more efficient, timely and easier for me. For you there is very little change. You still get the fabulous thoughts every Monday (or Tuesday if I forget).
