Fanfare for the Common Man

Fanfare for the Common Man

Fanfare for the Common Man - Robert Clinch
(Image: www.ArtGalleryOfBallarat.com.au)

During the course of the weekend, Wifey and I did a road trip to Ballarat. A cruisy two hour drive. Serendipitously we ended up at the art gallery and were delighted by an exhibition of works by Robert Clinch. His works were stunning.

We were thrilled to see some of the detail in his studies for the final pieces, tickled by the play on words of the names of his pieces and impressed by the way the gallery had displayed them to highlight their features.

Frequently, as the title of the exhibition and the piece above convey, they celebrated the common things in life. The simple act of playing a trombone, a truck being loaded at the docks, the monolithical creation of a warehouse and paper planes.

What are the seemingly ordinary and common things in your life you wish to celebrate? The writing a letter to a friend, maybe taking a dog for a walk or even the simple joy of rain pouring down making magical music. Sometimes it is not just the extraordinary that needs to be celebrated but the average, everyday, mundane and seeming boring things that make life worthwhile.

If you need a sound track for the celebration of the mundane then click here for the original piece of music titled "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland and click here for the Emerson, Lake and Palmer version.

What will you celebrate with a Fanfare for the Common Man (and woman)?

What's Happening?

What's Happening?

Paris Cat
(image: www.ParisCat.com.au)

Of late, many of my clients keep talking about how busy they are, which is a great thing. But what is actually happening?

Too often people will get caught up in a "Ground Hog Day" type of cycle. You know the one - you wake up, go to work, come home late, say hi to your family, have dinner, watch TV, go to bed and wake up, go to work.... and so on.

With the new, ever invasive technology it is getting worse. Emails are ALWAYS available. Work resources are now accessible everywhere. There is no OFF switch.

I have long been a believer in having a hobby. Something you do to give you energy, excitement and a connection with others. Something that feeds your soul. Do you have one Friends?

My friend and business collaborator Tanya is many things, and singing is one of her hobbies. Last night Wifey and I were privileged to see Tanya and her class graduate from a Jazz Singing intensive at the Paris Cat (in Melbourne). There were some great performances, some nervous performances, some shaky performances but they gave their best and it was pretty good. Most importantly the energy of achieving something for themselves in front of a crowd of 60 people was bubbling around us.

When was the last time you felt that way? So for you, What's Happening?

Why Survive when you can Thrive?

Why Survive When You Can Thrive?

Speaking with some of my clients and associates it seems there is a bit of fear in the market place.

There is fear about:

  • The election and which way it will go
  • What the new/old government means
  • The exchange rate
  • The Europen economies
  • The impact of the internet on retail
  • Cost of raising kids
  • Cost of health care
  • Cost of living
  • Cost of dying
  • Cost of retirement
  • Cost of getting new sales
  • Cost of growing business
  • And the list goes on... and on ... and on ...
Have a look at that list again and add any items that are going around in your head.

Notice anything?

They are the same situations that exist - no matter what. All being fearful and worrying about it does is shut down your mind to the opportunities and stop you from doing what you need to to have a fabulous business, job and life.

Shift your focus from Survive to Thrive. Look for ways and ideas to make today your best day ever. History is littered with examples of companys that have grown out of a recession.

Take action and make it count.

Is It Time?

Is It Time?

Coffee Time

I know some people that wear their annual leave entitlements like a badge of honour. They say things like, "I haven't had a holiday in FOUR YEARS!!"

That's insane!

Most people in Australia get four weeks of annual leave per year, so use it! You need it for Rest and Recreation. That's Re-creation where you re create your energy, your ideas, your enthusiasm.

So Friends when did you last have some leave that was for you? Is it time?

Do You Communicate Both Ways?

Do You Communicate Both Ways?

Are You Listening

With my Executive Mentoring clients, there is a common complaint that their teams don't listen to them and they can't understand why.

My experience has shown that your team are more likely to listen to you if you listen to them first. The basic rule of communication is "You have two ears and one mouth, use them in that ratio."

What about your team and your colleagues, do you listen to them?

You don't have to agree with them but do you listen to them. Again I am not talking about just hearing them but actually listening to them. I KNOW it feels like it takes more effort but the reality is, with more clarity in your communication there is a reduced need for repeat communication so it actually saves time.

So do you communicate both ways?

PS DON'T FORGET this Thursday 20th June at 4pm Australian Eastern Standard Time I will be running a 45 minute session on 5 Keys to Get the Response You Want.

It is all around the art of communication - both speaking and listening. Numbers are filling fast so find out more details and register here.

Do People Listen To You?

Do People Listen To You?

Be Heard

Too often when you want to be heard, people are in their own heads, on their phone, or simply hearing without listening to you. Communication is so important in this day an age but sometimes the act of speaking with presence can be a challenge.

How can you have Presence at your next meeting, when talking with your friends or when you truly need to communicate and be heard? Shouting doesn't work (ask any parent) but there are some great techniques that do help.

If you want to be heard, on Thursday 20th June at 4pm Australian Eastern Standard Time I will be running a 45 minute session on 5 Keys to Get the Response You Want.

As my regular readers, I also want to give you the chance to bring any questions you have about communication to the session to give you a boost.
You also get access to the recording if you can't make it at that time (but it is better if you can be there).

As they say in the classics "How much would you expect to pay?"

The answer - nothing!  It is my gift to you, regardless of where you are in the world.

What Haven't You Said?

What Haven't You Said?

I had misinterpreted a clients email. You know when you put meaning in an email that isn't there? So I didn't get in touch.

... time passed ...

Now whenever I thought of the client I started thinking, "I really should give them a call"

... time passed ...

I found great ways to sidetrack myself from the call and now it was six months later so I put some back stop methods in place to be sure I called.

  • I called
  • Then I visited and took responsibility for my stuff.
  • The client then signed up for more of my services (they had been waiting for me to call!).

Friends whether it is a client you haven't called, a friend you haven't spoken to or a loved one you need to say something too, don't leave it unsaid. The rewards and peace of mind will ALWAYS outweigh the discomfort.

So what haven't you said?
