2014 Twelve Days of Christmas

Twelve Days of Christmas


 

Welcome to the twelve days for Christmas - regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or now, this challende is still for you.
This is something that my gorgeous wife and I created a few years ago and it gets a great response every year. So why not share it again!

The 12 Days for Christmas challenge is rather than thinking about what your true love can give to you, think what you can give not only to your true love, but others in your life as well.

So here is your challenge for the next twelve days. Don’t forget, that they are cumulative, just like the song. That is, on the first day, you give the first thing. One the second day, you give the second thing and then the first thing. On the third day you give the third thing, the second thing and then the first and so on.
 

Here are your Twelve Days and their challenges:
 

On the first day of Christmas I gave to my partner or best friend, an extra long and extra firm hug.

On the second day of Christmas I gave to a person on the road, 2 moments to cut in ahead of me.

On the third day of Christmas I gave to the person on the street $3 for a coffee treat.

On the fourth day of Christmas I gave to a member of my team, 4 minutes to tell me what they thought of me.

On the fifth day of Christmas I gave to myself 5 minutes of mediation.

On the sixth day of Christmas I gave to my family, six minutes of singing silly songs.

On the seventh day of Christmas I gave to my kids, seven minutes of undivided attention.

On the eighth day of Christmas I searched my memory for eight things I learned from this year.

On the ninth day of Christmas I wrote in my diary, nine goals for the coming year.

On the tenth day of Christmas I gave to my friends, ten minutes of non-stop praise.

On the eleventh day of Christmas for my sanity, I gave myself an eleven minute bath (Frankincense and Myrrh is optional).

On the twelfth day of Christmas I committed to the community twelve hours of my time as a volunteer.
 

It is ALMOST singable to the original tune!! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it perfect but do act on as many as you can. Carry the spirit of Christmas and giving with you as you do.

What a Nightmare!

What a Nightmare

Winston the Wonder Dog

This is Winston.

He is our 15 month old toy poodle. Yes he is very cute. (I like to think he takes after me!)

This morning at 5:30am he was howling like a banshee.

I went to the laundry (where he sleeps) and picked him up. He was shaking. It seems that he had a nightmare and it really distressed him. I held him close, let him know everything was ok and he was safe. 

Life is like that.

Sometimes things happen and your situation becomes a nightmare. It could be a work project, it may be a relationship, your health or even your business can become a nightmare. When this happens, it is important that you have someone to support you and let you know you are safe and everything is ok. Then you can start to address the problem and find a solution.

Who will you turn to and who can turn to you?

On Saturday I was fortunate to host a 40 year anniversary for one of my clients at the Crown Paladium room.

It was better that fantastic, it was inspirational.

With short presentations showing how far the organisation had come, announcing some amazing financial results (in an industry sector that has been hit hard) all coupled with a very funny comedian and a fabulous band.

The message it got across was, "We are in a fantastic position and the future is bright for us all if we keep working at it."

While everyone enjoyed the celebration, many also received inspiration for the future. 

Inspiration can be fleeting so it is important to draw it from the simple things happening around you. From the big corporate event to acts of nature surrounding us and all those events in between.

It is the Monday before Melbourne Cup.

For many, the excitement is building about the "race that stops a nation".

The trainers have been working hard to get the horses ready. The horses have been doing most of the work to get themselves ready (whether they know it or not). The venue staff have been making the place look beautiful, getting the food and beverages ready and working on people logistics. The bookies are doing their research to make sure they know what odds they need to put out there. Everybody involved is getting ready.

The place is abuzz with excitement - particularly because this is a carnival is not just for Melbourne Cup but for many races as the carnival lasts for over a week.

But what about the jockey? The humble person dressed in bright colours who seems to perch precariously on the back of the majestic beast and control the run towards victory. The Australian Medical Journal has research showing that the job of jockey is THE MOST DANGEROUS JOB ON LAND (with only offshore fisherman being more dangerous).

What mental courage to head back out into a gladiator like battle time and time again. Ignoring the odds and managing the risks to strive for victory.

They must have such a strong drive for success and commitment to their goal.

When the Sky is Falling



Overnight Melbourne had one of the wildest thunderstorms it has even seen. Rolling thunder and lightning (very, very frightening) lasted for hours.

I know it lasted for hours because I lay awake listening to it at 2am and then at 6am. My gorgeous wife struggled to sleep with all the noiseso listened to it for hours also.

Poor Winston (our dog) did not know what to do with himself. He was shaking and probably thought the world was coming to an end. We knew it wouldn't last so we just comforted him and held him so he knew he was safe.

A couple of friends said that they had to do the same thing with their kids.

Life (and business) is like that. Sometimes you need someone who has been through it before or who has a different context or a great perspective to guide you. This is true whether it is because the sky is falling, you are struggling to achieve the success you are after or you are just facing a problem you don't know how to deal with.

Are You Up for the Challenge?



I had the great delight to host the Challenge to Lead Gala Dinner on Saturday. The guest speaker was Colonel Marcus Fielding, military strategist, author of Red Zone Baghdad and philanthropist.

It was interesting to hear his perspective on leadership. The difference in leadership style between nations, situations, genders and personalities. One of the comments that stuck with me is that Leaders are also the best Followers. They know that sometimes it is time to lead and other times you need to follow. While he mentioned many leadership theories, the underlying theme was that leadership is about trust. Trusting yourself, trusting those around you and trusting those that support you.

Trust takes courage - particularly in a time of war or a military presence. My experience is that Trust is built continuously. It is built in the social conversations, the pressure free interactions as well as when you and the team are operating under pressure.

Colonel Fielding said that one of reasons our Governor General Peter Cosgrove is seen to be a strong leader is that he is very skilled at small talk and will happily talk with anyone over a cup of coffee, glass of beer or drinking straight from the military canteen. To me, this is a natural trust building exercise and I suspect it is something that he does naturally.

Leadership (whether it is formal or informal) is a challenge. It is knowing what NOT to do as well as knowing what TO do. It is a blend of science and art. All the knowledge on leadership principles and the history of great leaders is a complete waste if you are not up to the challenge to act on that knowledge and act with an instinctive reflex.

Don't You Want The Sale?



My gorgeous wife and I had a road trip this week. We booked some time in the diary and took the day off.

We love going on drives because we have some fabulous conversation in the car and we see some amazing things wherever we go.

Like many tourists, we are always interested in what it would be like to live different places. Sometimes, we even have a conversation with the real estate agents.

This day, we saw a house we both liked but it had no price range. We went into the agent's office and asked the person behind the desk about the price range. Now I fully expected them to get the sales person because they usually do. I don't blame them. It is all about having a conversation, discovering if I am really a prospect or a tyre kicker.

They didn't know the price range and said they would check and went out the back. After a bit of typing and muffled conversation they returned to the front and said, "It is a new listing so I don't know any details. Here is the sales director's card you can call him and he will know."

My immediate thought was, "Don't you want the sale?"

They could have taken my details, called the sales director themselves, given me some indicative ranges for the area, offered to get back to me or any other range of ideas rather than dismissing me and making me take the next action.

What about you Dear-Reader? Do you make it hard for your clients and prospects to buy from you? Do you make them do all the work to just start the conversation?

Make sure that you and your team know exactly what to do to ensure that all of your prospects and clients have the details they need to get to the next stage of the sale without having to work for it.

You don't want them wondering, "Don't you want the sale?"

What Do You Do?

Sometimes, you just have to do something. It may not be much, but it is something.

My friend Melina from M.A.D. Woman is having a crappy time at the moment - literally!

She runs the Making A Difference Foundation where they provide food and basic items to the needy all around Australia.

Recently they had to vacate their premises as it was to be demolished to build some new apartments. Melina spent some time trying to find a new place with enough storage for all of their donated items as well as office space for the team to work out of.

A week before they had to move, things got really crappy. The sewage pipes in the building burst over a weekend.

The raw sewage made a mess of the place. Tragically three large skips of items to be donated had to be thrown away as it was all contaminated with waste. Loads of their office supplies and materials had to be thrown.



I rang her to ask her what could I do to help and during this call Melina told me she was close to just shutting up shop, but that is not the kind of girl she is. To kick off the new phase of life for the foundation, she is running a trivia night to raise money to restart the foundation. 

When asking "What can I do?" she replied that I could host and run the trivia night for them. So that is exactly what I am doing.

In asking what can YOU do, well you can buy a ticket to come along to the Collingwood town hall on Thursday 23rd October, you can make a donation of money or goods for those who need it or you can pass on the details of the trivia night to someone you know may be interested.

Much like when friends, colleagues or projects need some assistance, you just need to do something. Often it is little things that we can do - but the little things can have a huge impact.

It's Because of You


Please excuse this unexpected intrusion into your mail box but I wanted to say THANK YOU Dear-Reader for your support in this achievement.

I received the news yesterday that I have been awarded the global certification of Certified Speaking Professional (CSP). 
According to the National Speakers Association of Australia's current records, there are less than 70 CSPs in Australia at this time.

This has taken years to achieve and there were many obstacles along the way. I could not have done this without your support and encouragement.

The feedback I get following one of my keynotes, events that I host, mentoring sessions or even just my newsletter, give me great joy knowing that I have contributed to people like you.

It's On!

It's On!

I have been preparing for weeks.
I have tried to get my butterflies to fly in formation.
The excitement is building to a climax.

This week I perform in my one man Melbourne Fringe show, Gough. It's on!



Firstly a huge thanks to everyone who bought tickets. The opening night is a sell out and over 85% of tickets to the six shows have been sold. ( If you want to go, check ticket availability here)

I have some big shoes to fill. Gough is an icon of Australian politics so I want to represent him well. While I regularly speak for hours on stage, to perform a one man show and bring a script to life for 40 minutes is something completely different.

How do you feel when a project you have been working on is about to go live? Whether it is an IT system, a new product launch, redecorating the house or simply getting some landscaping done, the culmination of a lot of hard work is incredibly rewarding.

It's time to play the music; it's time to light the lights; it's showtime. It's on!

How Come I'm So Broke?



Accountants the world over are dealing with this question from their clients on a regular basis.

Some of us ask this question every time we look in our purse/wallet or visit the ATM.

Businesses with huge revenues regularly go into liquidation. Businesses earning good money have low bank accounts, so where is the money?

Tanya Lacy from Intercept taught me years ago that Revenue is Vanity and Profit is Sanity.
Danielle Storey from Million Dollar Relationships continues to insist that people Know Your Numbers.
Jerry Maguire insists that you Show Me The Money.

Cash flow is king, so stay on top of it. I regularly (every couple of days) look at my bank accounts - personal and private. I don't spend money if I can't afford it. I pay off unsecured debt (credit cards) in full when it is due. I am on top of what money is coming in and going out.

Most importantly, I think long term and short term on my finance. Wifey and I have long term investments we can service now. My Bromance keeps telling me to spend money on landscaping, a deck, air-conditioning, a new Jag - all things I talk about wanting but I don't need.

While I want them, they are really not essential and I can see that putting that money in my investments will give me a better lifestyle not that far down the track.

Oooo..... Delayed Gratification!!

Where Does The Time Go?




It's Monday ... AGAIN! 

This seems to keep happening on a regular basis. So why are people surprised when it comes around?

"Can you believe it's Monday already!" 

It's a bit like Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, remembrance days .... you name it, they come around quick.

Can I highly recommend to you that you take advantage of this? Dear-Reader, you KNOW that time will go quick, so you have to do more, experience more, be more in the limited time you have left.

Don't wait to do the thing you have always dreamed of, start it today.

If you don't start your desire (say piano lessons), in two years time, all you will be is two years down the track and still unable to play the piano. But if you start, you will be able to do way more than you do on a piano today. Even if it is merely to master the art of chopsticks!!

It annoys me when I have been a customer of a company for a prolonged period and they don't look after me.

It is even worse when I have spent thousands of dollars with that company and all I get in return is price increases!!

Health insurance companies, I am looking at you! 
Mobile phone companies you are also guilty of this sin.
Internet providers - you too!!

Don't get me wrong, I know why they do it. They offer discounts to new clients to get them in the door and on a 12 month contract. But it seems unfair that new customers get a free month when the existing customers get NOTHING!

The statistic of "It's 5 times easier/cheaper to sell to an existing customer than it is to get a new one" has been bandied around for years. We all know about it but how many of us actually do anything about it?

It is time for me to put my money where my mouth is.
