I don't mean start stealing from the rich! Robin Hood did something way more powerful than that.

I recently spent two weeks touring the UK. So how could I not visit Sherwood Forrest.

The visit had me thinking about Robin Hood. While redistributing the wealth was a great deed, his most powerful act was spreading the message that people did not have to live under a tyrant. Spreading his ideas, thoughts and helping others create a dream that was worth living for, gave something far more valuable than money.

While Robin Hood may be a fictional character [spoiler alert], you aren't.

Do you have a message you need to spread?

Is It Time You Took The Stage?



In this age of social media and global broadcasting, there are many people who have a lot to say. You may be one them (I know I am!)
Maybe you don't have something to say but you have a load of others in your life who do so you want to create a platform for them?

There are so many things to get right before you take the stage.

One key one is the understanding that IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU!
And I know I have covered that before so I wont go on about it.

Another key element is to know whether you have the right stage. Should it be a podcast, a newsletter, a video, an actual stage, a conference, a workshop or maybe a comedy show?

Don't forget, just because you have the stage doesn't mean you have the audience.

Last week we were at Stratford-Upon-Avon, the home of Shakespeare as part of our galivanting tour of the UK.
Shakespeare famously said, "All the world is a stage and the men and women merely players."

Make sure you are playing for keeps and playing seriously.

It's not Brexit, it's Brentrance!

It's not Brexit, It's Brentrance!



With all the hullabaloo about Brexit, I am happy that no-one really noticed our Brentrance!!

My gorgeous wife and I are in the UK as you read. 

We have an 80th Birthday, a wedding and a spot of touristing to do.

Probably the funniest thing about it is me folding myself up origami style to get into the hire car (a Hyundai i30).

A handful of nights are booked (including a trip to Warwick to see my Castle, my Garden and to encapsulate being the Earl of Warwick!) but the rest of it we are winging as we head up to Scotland (performing a mini-Brexit)

We have found that travel opens our mind. It helps us see what amazing things have happened and are happening in the world. We get to appreciate other cultures (or scratch our heads in amazement as why the do such things - I mean Black Pudding. Really!)

Travel gives us a healthier respect for those who have had different experiences and upbringing than us. It gives us more understanding of the differences. It helps us tolerate more about our fellow human beings.

You don't have to travel half way around to have these experiences but you can.

At the moment, our world seems to have forces that are trying to tear us apart because of our differences. We are taking this opportunity to celebrate these differences, experience the differences, and become closer to our fellow human beings.

Personally, I don't understand Brexit (I suspect I am not alone) and I am looking forward to the experiences that our Brentrance brings.

How Important are Words of Praise?

So much research has shown that people join a company but leave a manager. Yet so many managers think that all their team wants is a regular pay check. These managers are wrong.

Most people I have spoken with tell me that they want to know that they are doing a good job. The only way they will know this is being told as much by their boss. Their colleagues can tell them but it doesn’t mean as much as when it comes from your boss or someone in authority.

This was reinforced with something I saw on twitter this week.

Recently a high school drama class put on a school production of Alien with a tiny budget. That is a pretty big call! Looking at some of the stills and video on Twitter, it does look pretty cool.



Well word got around. The twitterverse got excited. Sir Ridley Scott, the man whose company made the original films heard about it. Seeing the fabulous job they did on a miniscule budget, he wrote a letter of thanks with some encouragement built in.


 

How do you think the kids, the teachers and the school feel right about now?
How delighted must you be when the person you are paying homage to lets you know you did an amazing job?
How thrilled would your team, family, colleagues, friends be if you told them how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate what they do?

How important are words of praise?

They are the most valuable currency you have.
