Tough Leaders Create Tough Times
In a recent coaching session with one of my retail clients, they were recounting how times are a little tough and have been for a while. By tough times, they mean that they have not been experiencing the continual growth they used to. So it is not "OMG - let's sack people" but more of a "Hmm...more stagnant growth, let's keep trying different ideas."
This is where the Tough Leader came in.
Usually they are really hands off and supportive. But because there is increased pressure from the board, the Tough Leader is now pressuring the area managers. More importantly, the Tough Leader is now starting to micro manage things that used to be Standard Processes.
Here is the problem. It is easy to Lead or Manage when things are going well. A few good words, the right resources and things will go well no matter what you do. When times start to get tough, a tougher management and leadership style will do more damage than good. It is in the tough times you MUST show your team and your subordinates that you have every faith in them.
It is still ok to air concerns, check on certain situations but as soon as you start micromanaging you are undermining your team and all of the previous good work you have done. Let the person do their job and check with them what they need to make the situation a success.
Tough Leaders have a strong tendency to make Tough Times even worse!
